What are reasonable asks of a professional cleaner?

"What can I ask my cleaner to do?" is a common question when considering hiring professional cleaners. We are here to answer this question, from the perspective of cleaners with over 10 years of experience! Of course, every cleaner and cleaning company is different and may have slightly different exceptions, but here is the general standards:

1. Throwing out specified items and taking out the garbage

YES!

The is not an unusual ask of your cleaners. A typical cleaning company will throw out fridge items when asked (especially if it's an AirBnb) and take out/replace the garbages. This can also apply to messes left out in other rooms as well, like decorations for birthdays and celebrations. Just so we are certain that the cleaning staff aren't throwing out any of your belongings, please specify before the clean what is/isn't safe to dispose of.

2. Removing excessive junk

NO!

This is more-so a job reserved for junk removal companies. The reason being is that your cleaners often won't have the vehicles or permits to remove all the junk and dispose of it somewhere legally. Excessive hoarding can often pose hazards too that a typical cleaner isn't equipped to deal with. It's always best to be honest with your cleaners about the state of the home so they can either be properly prepared or refer you to a specialist if needed.

3. Last minute cleans

DEPENDS!

Requesting a clean hours or even a day in advance will depend on the cleaners themselves. Larger companies like Just Too Clean are able to accommodate last minute bookings, however, smaller cleaners may already be booked up and unable to show up on short notice. This is totally dependent on the cleaners and your relationship with them!

4. Mopping/vacuuming

YES!

This is a very reasonable request. A typical cleaner will always sweep and mop. Vacuuming may not be done unless you have carpeted floors, in which case it may be best to inform the cleaner of this in advance so they bring a vacuum.

5. Cleaning carpets/stains

NO!

Although this does fall under the "cleaning" category, most cleaning companies do not have access to professional carpet cleaning machines and therefore, it is better to hire a separate carpet cleaning company for that task specifically. Our partner company, Carpet Buddy, handles all carpet cleaning so we are able to offer both services at the same time, although that is not the norm.

6. Doing the dishes

YES!

Any housekeeper or cleaner should have doing the dishes on their task list when they arrive. If it is only a few dishes, our team will just wash them, however, if it is a large amount we may just fill up the dishwasher to save time (and save the client money).

Because every company and independent cleaner is different, it's always best to go over expectations before the clean takes place. This is the best time to ask for any special requests and ensure you have hired the best cleaning company for your needs. If you are located in Ottawa, Toronto, or Montreal, Just Too Clean would be happy to help you out!
